Hey friends! Welcome back to Dance Tips with Brittany!
Wow, it’s finally December, can you believe it??
I’ve decked the halls here with boughs of holly and really soaking up this holiday cheer! I mean, it’s fun to celebrate, decorate, and watch a million Christmas movies about magic and love.
Last week, the tip was about pirouette preparations. Today, we are going to discuss the landing for pirouettes.
Today’s Tip is…
Pirouettes end in Plié
So whether you are taking parallel or turned-out pirouettes, one or both of your legs should end in a plié. We are going to add last week’s tip to today’s lesson. If you start in a parallel position, turn in a parallel position, then where should you land?
That’s right… in a parallel position.
Let’s see why!
It is similar to last week in saying that,
This method excludes choreographic choices in takeoffs and landings!
We need to stick the landing just as much as our effort in the turn. I think the most common mistake in competition pirouettes is landing in a position like this
This is a simple fix in ballet class because when doing a turn from a ballet position, it should land in a ballet position. The most common takeoffs are from 4th position or 5th position. If we take a:
Pirouette from 5th position our landing options are back to 5th or 4th position back. And the same thing when taking a pirouette from 4th position.
Things can get more confusing when taking parallel turns in our jazz classes. Don’t forget to land in plié! And please for the love of a Nutcracker, don’t land your jazz pirouettes in this position!
Your parallel turn can land in parallel 1st position, a jump out to 2nd position, or a step out in plié to continue a progression across the floor.
Thanks for watching! Please comment below other dance moves you can go into out of your pirouettes.
